1. Hello guys! I hope you're well. How are you guys dealing with this 2nd peak pandemic in your part of Germany?
Hi Y'all! Well just like any other band that's in it for playing live and meeting new people along the way, covid obviously hit us hard. We had to cancel pretty much all of our plans for 2020, but we always tried to make the best of the situation and therefore shifted our focus more towards writing new material. Luckily desperate times like these are a fertile soil for art in general, so we are really excited about the new stuff we'll be releasing over the next couple of months. That being said: The second wave of the pandemic is just fucking scary and it still feels like a bad dream. Hope everyone out there is doing okay, we miss you!
2. Cracking back onto music, your latest release 'Bodies Bent' is spectacular, similarly is prior release 'Strange Times'. What inspired the lyrics to BB? We assume ST is about covid, but is there a deeper meaning?
First of all, thank you! Although this version of 'Bodies Bent' is pretty new, the words are actually from way before the band even existed, I think I wrote them around 2014 or 2015. I hate to be blunt, but if I'm being honest the song is about excessive one-night-stands and all the emotional baggage that usually comes with that lifestyle. Repression, cowardice and turning away from those who actually care about you, just because you can't help but chase everything that makes you sick. So that one is - as usual - pretty emo. You assumed correctly by the way, 'Strange Times' is about the pandemic, or lets say it's about the feeling that covid left us with. Its just one of those "written with an acoustic guitar at the kitchen table" kind of songs and we're really glad with how it turned out. Like everyone else we literally had no idea what was happening, what to expect, who to believe. That scared the living shit out of and it still does 9 months later.
3. How do you (personally) compare your music this year, to your Lovebites releases in 2016?
Our first releases were the band trying to find itself, but now 4 years later it feels like we really got to the bottom of what kind of band we want to be and how we want our music to sound like. We've all been in different bands over the last 15 years, so obviously we've had plenty of experience to draw from when we started Heart Attax, but it still feels like we didn't quite know what kind of songs we wanted to write. Now we know and because of that our songwriting just became way more focused over the years and that's something we're really proud of.
4. What was it like recording the video for Strange Times?
Anybody who has ever shot a music video knows that it can be a pain in the ass sometimes. You play the same song over and over for like 12 hours straight until you start to kind of hate it and then you just hope for the best. Now imagine that during a pandemic. Safely distanced, wearing masks in between takes, not being able to just hang out together - it just felt strange, but in the end that's what the song is about so it kind of made sense. We are really happy with how it turned out. Shoutout to the folks at @punch_visual who did an amazing job keeping us sane and getting the best out of us.
5. Entering a new year now, what are your plans for 2021? With 3 new singles, I'm personally expecting a new record soon...
You're absolutely right! We're in the midst of recording a record right now and boy are we stoked about the new material, so keep your eyes peeled! Other than that, we haven't made any plans yet because we feel it just doesn't make sense at the moment, but we're hoping we'll be able to play shows again in the second half of 2021.
6. What is the funniest show story you can tell us?
There are tons of 'lol wtf? - moments' that pop in my head when I think about some of the shows we've played over the last couple of years, but there was this one time in 2018 were we had Thomas Anders from Modern Talking in the audience, and if that wasn't random enough he actually told us that he really enjoyed it afterwards, which I think is just fucking hilarious.
7. Once permitted, where would you like to play live first?
To be honest, at this point we really don't care anymore. We just want anything, give us a tiny, sweaty and crowded room to play in.
8. Who are you tipping for your 2020 best album?
- Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
- Deftones - Ohms
- Halsey - Maniac
- Machine Gun Kelly - Tickets to my Downfall
9. Out of anyone (living or not), who would you most like to collaborate with?
That's a tough one to answer because there are literally dozens of musicians we look up to, but I think having Chino Moreno from Deftones on one of our tracks would be a dream come true for all of us, because it would be one of those full-circle-moments, you know? Maybe we could resurrect David Bowie and let him chime in as well, that would be dope.
10. Leave a message for the fans...
Stay safe, hold on tight to whatever keeps you sane and wear you're fucking masks outside so we can finally get drunk together again soon. <3
