Another fan Friday here, and another with one of our contributors, Justin.
1. What band introduced you to this scene?
The first bands I really dove into were Chiodos and Grace Gale. I was always into punk and pop punk because in 2005 pretty much everyone was. And well it’s just a rabbit hole from there.
2. Who are your 3 favourite bands?
- Comeback Kid
- Sorority Noise
- Prince Daddy & The Hyena
3. Favourite song by each?
- Losing Sleep
- When I See You (Timberwolf)
- Wacky Misadventures Of The Passenger
4. How did you discover your favourite band?
From a video game strangely enough. The track ‘Wake the Dead’ was featured on one of the Burnout Games. So I basically would skip to it literally every time a race was about to start. So you’d just hear that song blazing through my speakers while I crashed cars and all that.
5. What is it that makes you love this scene?
Its camaraderie, the endless support of creatives. I’ve found countless writers, musicians, painters, and people dedicated to every other medium within this world. It’s beautiful to see the support, and it’s crazy to me that’s it’s becoming a multigenerational thing. Almost a family you choose. You know it’s at first you’re this kid and you start finding others kids that are just like you. And now like I’m by every definition, an adult and I’m seeing this new generation entering the scene and I’m just like “yeah I get it” welcome to the family.
6. If it isn’t too personal, what song means the most to you and why?
‘Just Stay’ by the front bottoms. It’s a cover of Kevin Devine and it just shakes me to my core. The first time I heard the line “you’re pretty but you hate yourself, I can hear it clear as day”, is earth shattering. When I first heard it I was in a real lull, just working the day job and paying rent and after hearing that I knew it was time to start doing more things. Never think a song will change your life at 27, but it definitely did.
7. What concerts would you have been to if it wasn’t for Covid-19?
Man I’m bummed, there was a cool little fest in my city called Cult Fest booked entirely by Dude Cult (diy Texas booking) and I was really stoked on that. I was also gonna catch Prince Daddy & the Hyena in April for my birthday. I’m sure there’s some others I missed. But with all that said, there will be shows and concerts in no time. Postponing for safety is the best call and I’ll still be there to support my friends and the music I love when this is all over.
8. Most recommended band?
Easily Prince Daddy & the Hyena. I know I’ve mentioned them a few times. But seriously this band is crazy and their music is so relatable. They’re so unique and every song is relatable.
9. Favourite thing about our page?
I love that the page gives lesser known bands the chance to get more press. I mean the reach on this thing is growing day by day. It’s important you know? All of these bands deserve a chance to be heard by a wider audience. I’m happy to support them and the page.
